B26 CHASSIS REGISTER

The B26 was introduced at the end of 1973 as the replacement for the relatively unsuccessful B23. Whilst retaining the look of the B23 the most obvious innovation was the adoption of a full monocoque to which was attached the rear suspension from the Formula 2/Atlantic B25 design. Following some very promising tests the first race for the B26 was the Kyalami 9 Hours in November, the first round of that year's Springbok Championship. Driven by Ian Scheckter and John Watson the B26 made a very impressive debut where it lead the race for a while until succumbing to overheating problems. The next round (and the only other in the series) saw the B26 victorious when Watson and Scheckter won by three laps.

Unfortunately for Chevron (as well as Lola and March etc.) the 1974 European 2-litre Championship saw the debut of the all-conquering Alpine Renault A441 which won all 7 rounds of the series. The best Chevron could manage was second at Hockenheim with John Lepp although the marque finished second in the Manufacturers Championship just pipping March and Lola.

Things were a little brighter in the World Championship for Makes where the B26 took several class wins. Richard Scott and Rafael Barrios started the ball rolling at the Zeltweg 1000 Kms, held at the Österreichring, the Forge Mill Racing-entered car finished 7th overall in addition to its class win. At Brands Hatch in September the works-entered car of Peter Gethin and Brian Redman was superb in the 1000 Kms race taking an amazing 4th overall beaten only by the two works Matras and the works Mirage, all 3-litre cars. To round off the season the Team Lexington B26 repeated the Brands Hatch result, 4th overall and 1st in class behind two Matras and a Mirage, at the Kyalami 9 Hours, this time the drivers were Guy Tunmer and John Lepp.

The best results for the B26 were achieved with the new Hart 420 2-litre alloy engine.
